Whether you’re planning a short-term rehabilitation stay or need long-term care for your loved one, we work with you to choose activities that fit your interests and abilities. Everything we do is designed to help you Recover, Rejuvenate, and Revitalize.
When you visit, you will see that our residents are busy doing things they have loved doing for years…gardening, working on a project, eating their favorite foods, or playing a game of pinochle or euchre. Many times, simply doing these favorite things can be therapeutic – mentally and physically.
Our goals are to enable people to continue to enjoy themselves, learn new things, and help each other. In other words, we help people get back to life.
Activities
If you fear that life inside a nursing home is boring with nothing to do, you might be surprised at how much you see going on around here. Each day, we offer between three and seven different activities to choose from. Here a few of our residents’ favorite things to do:
Enjoying Special Dinners
Our staff (especially those in the kitchen) have been with us a long time. They love to spice things up for the residents by creating all sorts of delicious meals—from super chicken to interesting salads it’s all delicious and flavorful. During the summer, we attend the MediLodge staff team’s local softball games and grill out, feasting on hamburgers, hot dogs, and other picnic goodies. Pancake Night is another favorite, when residents enjoy breakfast for dinner, complete with sausage, bacon, and orange juice.
Visiting with Children
We love hosting school children, Girl and Cub Scout Troops, and especially our grandchildren. When groups of kids visit, we share activities, stories, and that special connection that children have with people who are elderly or need a bit of help. We can’t tell you how much this means to our residents…and everyone—from residents to the kids and their families—really has a good time.
Playing with Pets
Many of the families who visit ask if they can bring their family pet or the resident’s pet from home. Please do! Our residents love seeing animals, especially the pet that they left at home when they came to stay with us. We encourage families to bring animals to visit anytime! Our pet therapy dogs, Taz and Bear, visit at least once a month.
Music Therapy
MediLodge of Sterling has a wide variety of entertainers that come in to visit and entertain our residents. It’s quite the variety of musical tastes – from karaoke, to polka to a Dean Martin impersonator – the residents love them all!
Wii Machine
A new addition to our activities department is the Wii video game system. We have organized games from bowling teams to race car meets and even exercise classes. Wii is fun for everyone – and is therapeutic at the same time!
Helping Out
Sometimes the simple routines of life like folding towels, baking muffins, getting the mail, or growing a garden can make a person feel like themselves again. Here, we encourage residents to participate in the routines of daily life that help make our facility feel more like a home.
Getting Out and About
Everyone needs a little change of scenery once in a while. Our residents love to go shopping (Wal-Mart and the outlet mall in West Branch are perennial favorites), visit the Oasis Beach at the nearby state park, and play the one-armed bandits at the casino. To get us where we need to go, we provide a wheelchair-accessible, 14-passenger van to take residents on appointments and outings in style and comfort.
Ask the Activity Director for a copy of the monthly calendar. Family members and friends are always welcome to come and participate in any of our activities—your family member would love to see you and we would, too.
